Aluminum gravity casting mold

Molds for the aluminum gravity casting process consist of two halves. Aluminum gravity casting molds are usually formed from gray cast iron because it has about the best thermal fatigue resistance, but other materials include steel, bronze, and graphite. These metals are chosen because of their resistance to erosion and thermal fatigue. They are usually not very complex because the mold offers no collapsibility to compensate for shrinkage. Instead the mold is opened as soon as the casting is solidified, which prevents hot tears. Cores can be used and are usually made from sand or metal.

The gravity casting mold is heated prior to the first casting cycle and then used continuously in order to maintain as uniform a temperature as possible during the cycles. This decreases thermal fatigue, facilitates metal flow, and helps control the cooling rate of the casting metal. That is why we usually have to add heating system and temperature monitoring equipment onto the gravity casting mold to keep uniform necessary temperature.

Venting usually occurs through the slight crack between the two mold halves, but if this is not enough then very small vent holes are used. They are small enough to let the air escape but not the molten metal. A riser must also be included to compensate for shrinkage. The design of reisers should be considered and calculated carefully to locate sufficient risers but not extra necessary risers which only waste molten metal.

Mechanical ejectors in the form of pins are used when coatings are not enough to remove casts from the molds. These pins are placed throughout the mold and usually leave small round impressions on the casting. The ejectors holes can also be used for venting, and in order to facilitate venting, we will make some extra fake ejector holes which is not used for push casts out of mold but release the air in the cavity during pouring.

Aluminum gravity casting mold making

HH aluminium gravity casing factory provides gravity casting mold design as well as making gravity casting molds. For all the aluminum gravity casting projects in our own foundry, we design and make the casting tooling's by ourselves. Since the gravity casting machines used in different factories can be different, the mounting and pouring system should be designed according to the casting machined applied. In HH casting foundry ,we are using advanced tilting gravity casting machines. Such casting machines have quite high automatic control level, therefore the gravity casting tooling should be added by some assistant equipments such as heating equipment, water cooling system, and temperature monitoring equipment. So it is always preferred for own developed mold for gravity casting operation.
